Don’t just go out and buy the latest model if you’re looking for a new air conditioner. Take the time to ensure that you buy the right kind for your home. Here are some important factors you should consider.
Sizing – Buying the right size of air conditioner is important. Many homeowners mistakenly choose oversized air conditioners, thinking they can simply set it to low when needed. The truth is, the wrong air conditioning size can cost more to operate and maintain. Oversized air conditioning systems would be too efficient and turn off more often, failing to dehumidify the indoor spaces, resulting in uncomfortably clammy indoor air.
BTU – British Thermal Unit, or BTU, is the unit of measure for the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water by one degree, at sea level. It is an important consideration when buying air conditioners, as it helps you gauge the rate a particular AC unit can cool a room. The higher the BTU, the faster it can take away heat – but as with sizing, you should get the BTU level that’s proportional to your indoor spaces.
SEER Rating – Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures the air conditioner’s energy efficiency. The SEER rating is typically printed on a yellow label, separate from the manufacturer specifications and warnings label. The rating is clearly indicated on the label and sometimes include estimated energy savings. Today’s air conditioners are rated to have SEER ratings of at least 13 and can go as high as 25 for larger units.
Inverter – If your home is still equipped with a separate heating system, consider switching to a single inverter-type HVAC system. It features a compressor with a reverse mode, which generates heat instead of cold air. A flick of a switch and it goes back to normal air conditioning mode. Most existing ductwork is compatible with such systems but requires professional installation.
